Lawyer: Ask your friends, check out local artists' web sites, and if you see someone with great ink, ask them where they got it. You don't want to cheap out on something that will be with you for the rest of your life.

My roommate just got a tattoo and I have been thinking about it, too. What should I look for when choosing a place and an artist? I want to be clean, but not overly prices.

@Johnny007 -- If you go to a reputable tattoo parlor, the chances of any nasty aftermath are very low. The artists keep everything sterile and will take all possible precautions.

Scarring is something else entirely--by design, it damages the skin beyond repair. And it's just that much easier to get a nasty infection if you aren't incredibly careful with the wounds after you get them.

I'm thinking about making a tatoo and, honestly, HIV is not what I'm afraind of. I read that the virus is unstable out of human body and dies quickly. But the idea of other infections, inflammation and taking antibiotics afterwards just makes me sick. My friend did "scarring" or whatever it is called (cutting out and image on your skin)...abother scarring was done by a surgeon a week later, cleaning out the previous one:(

Those symptoms sound serious enough that I'd suggest you see a doctor as soon as possible. What you're experiencing may or may not be related to the tattoo, but it's best to have a doctor sort it out.

I had my first tattoo 5 days ago. I got a small butterfly on the top of my right foot. Yesterday afternoon I started to experience a stiff neck and the start of joint and muscle pain. By 7:00 last night I could hardly navigate. I think I'm having a reaction to the tat. If this is the case will my body eventually learn to tolerate and accept the foreign envasion of the ink? Is this temporary. I'm not having problems at the sight of the tat it seems to be internal, sestemic. Please advise...

[...] infmom wrote a fantastic post today on “The worst for last… Tattoo health issues 5″Here’s ONLY a quick extractThey may tell you it’s perfectly fine to just wipe things down with alcohol or boil them for a few minutes. Don’t fall for that. It’s obviously also not perfectly fine to just put ink on your skin and have at it with a sharp instrument. … [...]
